Ep 35 – Shotgun!

No this episode is NOT about the Duran Duran Song…. This is about the best home defense weapon available.  The shotgun is the most versatile weapon available period, and in most cases the perfect home defense gun.  The shotgun combines power, fear factor, and ease of use in a nice affordable package.  Seriously anyone who hears the KaChink of a pump shotgun will vacate any property that they were not invited onto.

Thanks for the lunchtime listening. Possibly a quick blurb on trigger locks/storage of your weapon is in order. That’s something I consider and haven’t decided anything on. I have a 12 gauge for bird hunting but it is in the basement with a trigger lock on it, so not really available for home defense since all bedrooms are upstairs. I’ve considered moving it up to the bedroom closet but haven’t made that leap yet. Someday the kid will be old enough to get his mitts on it so that is a consideration, even though he will be taught gun safety and shooting starting as soon as he is ready.

Also looked into Ithaca shotguns since I hadn’t heard of them before. They sell a Defensive model that looks like a good and simple gun with a 5 shot or 8 shot capacity.

My shotgun is in a locked metal cabinet (I hesitate to call it a safe). The Key is quite convenient for an adult who knows where to look. I can be in the cabinet and ready with the shotgun in 15 seconds or less. If you are sporting a handgun they make little safes with easy combination locks (place hand on pad and use fingers in a predetermined pattern) for a reasonable price.

I’m picturing you in pajamas and kevlar, with a bandoleer of shells across your chest like Principal Strickland in Back to the Future 2. It’s a glorious image.

“The bigger the balls, the less you can fit in the package.”

    Sage words…

Any opinions on these combo shells:

Those shells are possibly the worst combination ever for home defense. Why? Lets investigate.
      1. Over Penetration -The slug could go through several walls and really make an innocents day really bad.
      2. The benefit of the pellets in a shotgun are the spread (albeit slight at home defense ranges) so that accuracy is LESS of an issue. Seriously people you still have to aim ok, at HD ranges your pattern will be no larger than a pint glass in most cases. With only 3 pellets it’s almost why bother.
      3. Sweet bejebus they are expensive!

I think these were created for police who won’t know what range they would need to be shooting at so pellets at short range and slug for long range that way they don’t have to change ammo. I still think they are terrible for that situation as well. Now I’ve never used these nor have I seen them in use, but at first glance this looks like one of those situations where 2 pretty people have a really ugly baby.

I saw these the other day, and while they are cool I wonder how reliable the system is as far as jamming etc goes. Still kinda neat.
